The DNA molecule is very suitable for forensic purposes for the following reasons:
- It is unique for each person (with the exception of identical twins)
- Over time it virtually does not change
- It is impossible to completely avoid leaving DNA material (it is everywhere: in the root of hairs, epithelial cells, saliva, semen...)
- It is stable and can be analysed a long time after it is deposited on objects
- A very small amount of DNA is sufficient to obtain a DNA profile
