Perinatal infections are infections of the fetus caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites that are present in the mother, often without symptoms.
The placenta presents an insurmountable barrier to many pathogens and protects the baby that has no developed immune system. However, there are pathogens that are able to infect the child during pregnancy or during delivery.
Not all perinatal infections are equally dangerous. A cytomegalovirus infection of the mother during pregnancy is potentially dangerous because it can cause serious physical and mental disorders in babies. From samples of the chorionic villi (CVS), amniotic fluid, umbilical cord blood or aborted material it can be determined whether a pathogen has passed through the placenta and infected the baby. This test can only be done using PCR.
In our lab we prenatally test for the presence of cytomegalovirus and toxoplasma (Toxoplasma gondii) in the fetus.
These prices do not include sampling of CVS, amniotic fluid or umbilical cord blood - these are taken exclusively by gynecologists who may charge for this service.
